Gwynneth Scism Blackwelder

September 28, 1939 – September 24, 2023


CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - Mrs. Gwynneth Scism Blackwelder, 83, of Vista Drive, passed away on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at Peak Resources in Cherryville.

Gwynneth was born on September 28, 1939 in Gaston County a daughter of the late Earl Warren Scism and Neva Howell Scism Hollifield. She was retired from the City of Cherryville. Gwynneth was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cherryville where she served in many capacities over the years and especially enjoyed being a member of the choir. She was a member of the music club, taught Kindergarten at Club Carolina and was an original member of the Cherry Blossoms.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Joel David "Buggy" Blackwelder; infant son, William Henry Blackwelder; and her brother Warren Scism.

Survivors include two sons, Joel David Blackwelder Jr. and wife Collette of Cherryville; James Perry Blackwelder of Oconee County, S.C.; a daughter, Amy Weidhaas and husband Jim of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a sister, Screttia Hartman; five grandchildren, Emily Blackwelder, Annie Blackwelder, Caroline Weidhaas, Matthew Simmons (Lauren) and J.D. Weidhaas; two great-grandchildren, Aiden Simmons and River Parris; a brother-in-law, Billy George "Brother" Blackwelder and wife Joyce of Pensacola, Florida.

The family will receive friends from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church. At other times the family will be at the home.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating.

Burial will follow the service at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
