Carolyn Sue Shields, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

Born on December 19, 1948, in Princeton, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Miller McGuire and Pauline Hull McGuire. Though she spent the majority of her life as a beloved resident of Bluefield, West Virginia, her warm spirit made a home wherever she was.

During her career, she worked in marketing for First Community Bank, but her true vocation was people. To know her was to be swept up in her warmth. She was a social superstar. The undeniable life of the party and the reigning queen of mischief and fun, she had an extraordinary capacity to give love to everyone she met. She was famously known as the world’s best gift giver, a title earned not just through the presents she carefully selected, but through her profound kindness and genuine interest in others. She was always asking questions, fiercely dedicated to making sure everyone in her orbit felt deeply loved, heard, and connected.

She lived for the magic of the holidays, with Christmas and the Fourth of July being her absolute favorites, times when her spirit of celebration and family tradition shined the brightest. But her greatest devotion was to her family, and she loved her husband, Marvin "Pete" Shields, with all her soul who she dated for five years and was married to for fifty-seven.

She was the glue that held everything together. She possessed a remarkable, enduring strength that carried her loved ones through all of life's seasons. She was not only a devoted mother, but a mother figure to countless others. She took immense pride and joy in helping to raise her three cherished grandchildren; Cindy, Hadley, and Zander Shields. She is leaving them with a legacy of unconditional love and vibrant memories.

She is survived by her husband, Pete, her son, Barry, and daughter-in-law, Kris; her three grandchildren, Cindy, Hadley, and Zander; and her beloved siblings: Jack Rumburg, Connie Spencer, Gary McGuire, Paulette Sluss, and Richard McGuire.

A Celebration of Sue’s life will be held at a later date.

Warlick Funeral Home of Lincolnton, N.C. is serving the Shields family.
