Curtis “Curt” Hjalmar Holmquist
November 19, 1932 – September 26, 2024
NEWTON, N.C. - Curtis “Curt” Hjalmar Holmquist, 91, of Newton passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024 at Abernethy Laurels.
He was born November 19, 1932 in Red Wing, Minn. to the late William and Tina Jagusch Holmquist. Curt was of the Christian faith, a United States Army veteran, and retired from the banking industry.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughters, Jennifer Zwonitzer and Maile Holmquist.
Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 70 years Lorraine Kozak Holmquist of Abernethy Laurels; son Scott Holmquist and wife Corinne of Mount Holly; daughter Lora Zwonitzer and husband Dan of Cook, Minn.; grandchildren Nate Zwonitzer (Kathy), Ryan Zwonitzer (Erin), Mark Holmquist (Lexie), and Carissa Frank (Tyler); great-grandchildren Taylor Zwonitzer, Axel Zwonitzer, Finley Zwonitzer, Elsie Frank, and Malia Frank.
Curt's legacy is not only one of professional accomplishment and community service, but also as a dedicated family man. He was a loving husband to his beloved wife, a cherished father to his children, and ‘Bucka” to his grandchildren.
Curt served in the Army as a corporal during the Korean War. He received a BA degree from Hamline University.
He later had a successful banking career with Northwestern National Bank, Minneapolis, Minn., and served as President of the Wells Fargo Bank in Winona, Minn. for 25 years. He valued spending time with family and friends. He loved boating on the Mississippi River, golfing, and traveling the world with his sweetheart, Lorraine.
Curt enthusiastically served every community he was in Winona; Board of Directors, St. Mary’s College, Board Member Winona Community Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, and Historical Society. In Palm Desert, Calif.; Home Owners Association of Ironwood. In Newton, NC; assisted in organizing the Annual Memorial Day Golf Cart Parade and the Kentucky Derby Festivities at Abernethy Laurels.
Curt loved projects and thought he could fix almost anything with caulk, glue, duct tape, or paint. His workbench was meticulously organized. He even outlined tools on the pegboard so everyone knew where to put them back. He was creative in music and art; a prolific painter, enjoyed drumming and writing songs with Lorraine.
