LINCOLNTON, N.C. - During the fourth week of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Citizen’s Academy, participants continued learning about the use of less lethal force.

Lieutenant Dylan Houser, who is a TASER master instructor, gave a detailed presentation on the history of TASER, how they work, and what makes them effective. TASER is a conducted energy weapon, which is used by law enforcement, to temporarily incapacitate a subject by sending an electrical current through probes and into the subject’s body.

Participants were given then opportunity to operate a TASER, deploying a cartridge onto a training target. AXON, the company that manufactures TASER, offers a wide variety of training aids for officers. This training includes virtual reality scenarios using virtual reality headsets. Participants were put through life-like scenarios where they were faced with making a decision on whether or not to deploy their TASER, where to deploy the TASER, and when to deploy the TASER.

Next week, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy will learn handcuffing, subject control, and arrest techniques. Download the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office smart phone app for notifications about the sheriff’s office, for inmate and arrest information, to apply for a concealed carry permit, and more.
