Local Vietnam Veteran Has Home Rebuilt

Purple Heart Homes makes it happen for Donald Surratt

IRON STATION––A local Vietnam War veteran has had his home rebuilt for him.

According to Purple Heart Homes spokesman Len Bagwell, Donald Surratt, 72, of Iron Station is benefitting from some substantial help from the Statesville-based company. Surratt, a United States Army veteran, served as an officer in the military police during the Vietnam War. He recently had his home rebuilt from the ground up, thanks to Purple Heart Homes and its partnerships with Lowe’s Home Improvement, Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor Hollingsworth Roofing and Love Our Veterans.

After leaving the service, Surratt took care of his son, who battled muscular dystrophy until he passed away. Surratt’s home was in dire need of major repairs and was on the verge of collapse. Purple Heart Homes rallied support from the community and numerous business partners to assist in rebuilding the home from the ground up.

Purple Heart Homes marked the completion of Surratt’s repair project with a Thursday ceremony, intended to honor Surratt’s service and thank the community partners and donors who made this project possible.

Co-founded by two combat-wounded veterans, Purple Heart Homes has been bringing communities together to provide safe, barrier-free housing solutions for qualified veterans since its founding in 2008. A nonprofit organization, it supports service-connected disabled and senior veterans from all eras all across America, thanks to a growing network of local chapters. Programs include critical home repairs and renovations to help veterans live independently in their homes, home-ownership programs and transitional housing through partnerships with other nonprofit organizations.
