Red Hawk Women’s Hoops, Baseball Named NJCAA Academic Teams Of The Year

HICKORY, N.C. — Two Catawba Valley Community College athletic programs have been named NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year.

The Red Hawk women’s basketball and baseball programs received NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors this past week. The award goes to an NJCAA member program who achieves at least a cumulative 3.0 team grade point average during the 2023-24 school year.

The Catawba Valley Community College women’s basketball program earned the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honor for the fourth time in program history after recording a 3.19 GPA.

It was one of 105 NJCAA women’s basketball programs throughout the NJCAA to earn the Academic Team of the Year distinction.

“CVCC women’s basketball strives for excellence in the classroom as well as on the court,” said Red Hawk women’s basketball head coach Tisha England. “Basketball is just a means to an end. Education will always be vital to your daily success. We take pride in producing student-athletes and impacting their future in a positive way. I am proud of what these ladies have accomplished, and I am looking forward to more success here at CVCC.”

For the fourth consecutive year, the CVCC baseball program earned NJCAA Academic Team of the Year honors after recording a cumulative team GPA of 3.05.

The Red Hawks' baseball program was one of 146 NJCAA baseball programs in the nation to earn this accolade.

“We’re very proud of the accomplishments our players received based off of the success in the classroom,” said Red Hawk head baseball coach Marshall McDonald. “They really took care of their business on and off the field this year. We take pride in valuing the person over the player.”

A total of 1,194 NJCAA athletic teams from 32 different sports received the NJCAA Team of the Year honor.
