Robert William Faires Jr.
Robert William Faires Jr., age 92 of Cherryville NC passed away peacefully on 31 January 2025. He was born October 24, 1932 in Rock Hill, SC to the late Robert William Faires Sr. and Sara Erselle Ingram Faires. Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher, Chairman of Council, and Representative at Church Conference.
Bob faithfully served his country during the Korean War for 4 years in the United States Navy. He crossed the International Date Line and became a “Trusty Golden Dragon” and was initiated into the “Mysteries of the Far East.” His was a lifetime member of the DAV and the American Legion Post 100 where he was an adjutant and financial officer. He was a member of Cherryville Masonic Lodge 505 A.F. & A.M. and a Shriner of the Oasis Temple in Charlotte and Cherryville.
Bob graduated from Lenoir High School and received his BA in Business Administration from Michigan State University where he was a lifetime member of the MSU Alumni Association. Bob spent 11 years with Burlington Industries and retired after 20 years as Tax Manager at Carolina Freight Carriers. He was active in the Cherryville Rotary Club where he served twice as president and secretary and was a 5-time recipient of Paul Harris Fellow. He was an Institutional Representative for Boy Scouts of America. Bob served as president of the Catawba Valley Regional American Lung Association of NC where he was awarded Volunteer of the Year. Other offices and committees held included: Secretary and Treasurer of the Ironmen Booster Club, President of Band Parents Association, representative of the Southern Piedmont Health Systems Agency Inc., board of directors for Cherryville Chamber of Commerce, member of Cherryville Audit Committee, and member of Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery Committee. He enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, watching sports, hunting, and fishing. Out of all of Bob’s accomplishments, he was most proud of his family and cherished every moment spent with them.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Mary Sue Carlyon Faires; sister, Mary Gene Faires Welsh, and brother, Ned Tracy Faires.
He is survived by daughter, Melinda Faires; son, Robert W. Faires, III, and wife, Kathy Hill Faires; daughter, Katherine Faires; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink St. Cherryville, NC 28021.
