NEWTON––“Please join us in congratulating a special, young man.”

That’s how Catawba County Sheriff Don Brown put it Wednesday. Brown was referring to Tucker Wyant, a young citizen who was recognized by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office and the Cooksville Volunteer Fire Department of Vale. On Tuesday, Wyant received an award––a plaque of recognition––for the actions he took in working to save the life of Becky Price, an elderly neighbor missing at the time (June 23).

“These efforts surely saved her life,” the plaque’s inscription states.

Brown proudly bestowed the plaque upon Wyant.

“Thank you, Tucker,” the sheriff said, “for stepping up and helping out in our community. Congratulations! Job well done!”

According to the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons, there are some 327 missing people currently statewide: about 3.2 missing per 100,000 residents. Across the country, males make up about 60 percent of all missing persons cases. The average age of those who go missing is about 34.
