HICKORY, N.C. - Edward “Bubba” Whaley Rion, 86, of Hickory passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at his residence.

He was born October 1, 1937 in York County, S.C. to the late Preston and Sadie Smith Rion. Bubba was a member of His Image Ministry in Hickory and retired from the automotive industry where he was in sales. He enjoyed working outside mowing grass, singing with the praise and worship team, and was involved in the men’s group and intercessory prayer team at his church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Dink Rion, George Rion and Billy (William) Rion.

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 35 years Judith Grogg Rion of the home; sons David Thomas Preston Rion and wife Jill of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Chris Rion of Concord, Robert Rion and wife Phyllis of Pickens, S.C., Jon Rion; daughter Amber Rion Bitting of Charleston, S.C.; brother Duke W. Rion of Charlotte; sister Sara Smith and husband Bill of Griffin, Ga.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.  

A memorial service to celebrate Bubba’s life will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024 at 4 p.m. at His Image Ministries in Hickory. Pastor Brad H. Spencer will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3-3:45 p.m. at His Image Ministries.
