CONOVER, N.C. - James Edward Propst Sr., 82, of Conover, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at his residence.

He was born August 3, 1942 in Catawba County to the late Charles Edgar Propst and Katie Ramseur Propst. James was a member of Thomas Chapel AME Zion Church in Conover and retired as a lab technician with Hickory Vinyl. He enjoyed playing the guitar, singing gospel music, carpentry and landscaping.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Edward Propst Jr.; brothers, William Propst, Marvin Propst, Jerry Propst; and brother-in-law, Luther Lohr Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years Katie Lee Young Propst of the home; sons Jacoshio Edwin Propst and partner Stephanie Shade of Conover, James Devon Carson and partner Sharon Conley of Hickory; daughters Bridgette Lynnette Ingram and partner Rodrick Hester of Conover, Beverly Lee Wilson and husband Lindsey of Charlotte; brothers Robert Franklin Propst Sr. of Newton, Charles Sterling Propst and wife Barbara of Newton; sister Barbara Jean Lohr of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister-in-law Margie Barber Propst of Hickory; grandchildren Tyjuan Propst and wife, Cindy, Direesh Freeman and partner Shontay Cotton, Dorion Freeman and wife Stephanie, Cabrion Ingram, Maliki Propst, Janniah Propst, Shytavia Petterson, and Kenya Williams; six great-grandchildren; and a loving group of nieces and nephews.

A homegoing service to celebrate James’ life will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 12 p.m. in the Chapel of Bennett Funeral Service, 7878 NC Hwy 16, Newton. Rev. Dwayne Tutt will officiate. Burial will follow at Washington Park Cemetery in Conover. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Service.
