Moped Rider Killed In Thursday Collision

Daniel Wayne Salmons dead at 57

CONNELLY SPRINGS––A Thursday evening crash killed a moped rider in Burke County.

According to Master Trooper Christopher Casey of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in a same-day statement, at about 5:35 p.m., NCSHP personnel responded to and investigated the fatal collision on US-70 near Lockee Street. A 2023 BMW “X1,” travelling west on US-70, failed to reduce speed adequately and collided with a 2022 Taotao moped that had slowed down to turn right into a private driveway.

The driver of the moped, Daniel Wayne Salmons, 57, of Connelly Springs, was thrown from the moped. Salmons succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the BMW, Haygen Rashae Sigmon, 20, of Connelly Springs, was not injured, as Casey informs.

“The initial investigation indicates impairment was not a contributing factor in the collision,” he adds. “Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Burke County District Attorney’s office. US-70 was closed in the area for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation.”
