Notification of Untreated Wastewater Discharge
On Sunday, October 18, 2026 at approximately 6 p.m., City Staff noticed a manhole overflowing on Madison Street. City staff determined that a lift station malfunctioned which caused approximately 10,000 gallons of raw untreated wastewater to spill on the ground, with approximately 5,000 gallons spilling into the South Fork Catawba River.
The City of Lincolnton’s Distribution and Collection staff had the lift station properly working by 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Staff jetted the line to ensure there were no blockages or other issues with the line. The NC Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Resources was notified on Sunday, October 18, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. about the incident and that the issue had been resolved.
Upon the lift station issue being resolved, City Staff applied lime to disinfect the area. Also, fresh water was introduced in to the river to improve water quality. The City of Lincolnton’s drinking water was not affected by this incident, and no fish were killed in this incident.
This release has been prepared in accordance with the NC General Statute 143-215.1C. This statute requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection system or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more is discharged and if any amount reaches surfaces waters.
