Thomas Paine (born January 29, 1737, Thetford, Norfolk, England—died June 8, 1809, New York, New York, U.S.)

This Prominent Americans Issue stamp depicts Thomas Paine, an English-American author and revolutionary. Paine’s pamphlets “Common Sense” and “The American Crisis” inspired many Americans to support the Patriot cause and declare independence from Britain. Following the American Revolutionary War, he wrote “The Rights of Man” in support of the French Revolution. The stamp was issued on January 29, 1968 by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in the United States of America.
