Third Annual Eta Mu Lambda Cup, Aug. 23

Big golf event is fundraiser for worthy cause

SHELBY––It’s a hole in one!

It’s the third annual Eta Mu Lambda Cup, and it’s coming up Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. at the Deer Brook Golf Club in Shelby, according to fraternity chapter spokesman Jason Barber of Lincolnton. As he explained this week, this golf tournament is a fundraiser for the fraternity’s Lemuel Froneberger Scholarship.

“We award a scholarship to a graduating male from Lincoln, Gaston and Cleveland counties,” said Barber. “Since 2022, we have awarded more than $12,000 in scholarships.”

Bruce Mack is the tournament’s chairman. As Mack informed, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is America’s first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity created for black men. It was established on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., back in 1906. The Eta Mu Lambda Chapter is a local alumni organization of the fraternity. It was founded as a nonprofit in Gastonia in 1960. It provides community partnerships, programming and services to the communities of Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland counties.

Mack also spoke further about the scholarships.

“Your generous donation and/or contribution will ensure these young men have some of the necessary resources needed to help make their undergraduate studies successful,” he said. “We are asking your business or organization to assist us in this effort by providing sponsorship at some level at our charity golf tournament.

“On behalf of the brothers of the Eta Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.,” Mack added, “we would like to say ‘thank you’ to your business or organization for your support and patronage. Last summer’s event was a great success, due to your gracious community support, and that created great excitement for this year’s event!”
