Update On Recent Convenience Store Shooting

DA: shooting lawful and justified; no criminal charges filed

GASTONIA––The Gaston County Police Department has released an update on a shooting incident that occurred two weeks ago.

According to a Tuesday release from the GCPD, the agency investigated an armed robbery that happened Sept. 10 at the Will’s Food Store location at 4010 Hickory Grove Road in the rural Gastonia area between Mount Holly and McAdenville. The suspect in the armed robbery was identified as Victor Almodovar, Jr.

Armed with a handgun, Almodovar demanded money from the store employee. A customer in the store was also armed with a handgun and shot Almodovar during this incident. Almodovar was transported to CaroMont Regional Hospital, where he died from his injuries. No one else at the store was injured.

Following a thorough investigation, Gaston County Police Department personnel met with members of the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office to review the incident. The DA’s office determined that the shooting was a lawful and justified use of deadly force, and accordingly, there will be no criminal charges filed. The GCPD will not be releasing the names of the victims involved in this incident.
