LINCOLNTON, N.C. - The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy completed their seventh week of the program on Tuesday evening.

Class began with Trooper Casey, of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, discussing the duties and responsibilities of the State Highway Patrol. Trooper Casey reviewed the history of the State Highway Patrol, how the agency has grown over the years, and how those changes have impacted Lincoln County. This portion of the class gave participants the opportunity to ask questions and get a detailed look at the daily operations of the State Highway Patrol.

During this class, participants also had an opportunity to visit and tour the new Lincoln County Emergency Services building, which houses Lincoln County Emergency Management, EMS, and the office of the Fire Marshal. EMS Shift Supervisor K. Brewster led a tour of the facility, as well as answered questions about EMS operations.

Participants were then taken to the Lincoln County Communications Center, where telecommunicators answer 911 and non-emergency calls for service. Dispatchers described how they answer these calls, the specific questions they must ask each caller, and how they determine which agency to dispatch. The Lincoln County Communications Center dispatches to all Fire Departments within Lincoln County, The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the Lincolnton Police Department, Lincoln County EMS, Lincoln County Animal Services, and after-hours calls for other county services or utilities.
