SOCCER

The East Lincoln soccer team scored five goals in each half to win 10-1 Tuesday over Lake Norman Charter. LNC has had some very good teams in the past, but this year, they're winless in five games. East is now 3-2-2 and begins conference play Thursday hosting North Lincoln.

North tied Lincoln Charter Tuesday 2-2. North is now 4-1-1; Lincoln Charter is 5-1-2. The Eagles play at Forest Hills (Marshville) on Thursday. [More on this game will be included in our Friday 9/9 sports article.]

Lincolnton lost to St. Stephens. Coach Brad Bagan told us: "Our lone goal was by Santiago Vargas. We started decent, let in a goal early and then felt sorry for ourselves the rest of the first half and let in 7 more before we got one back; looked better out of the break, but by that time it was too late. We gave up a free kick in a bad area and they finished us off. This leaves us 0-4-1 with conference play starting next week and it's time to either step up and stop letting ourselves get bullied all over the field or it's gonna be a long season." The Wolves will host Bunker Hill on Monday (Sept. 12th). The Bears are 1-3 after losing at Alexander Central Tuesday. They host Hibriten on Thursday before coming to LHS on Monday.

Maiden downed Draughn 8-2 to improve to 4-3 on the year. The Blue Devils will host East Burke Monday in their first conference match.

CVCC CROSS COUNTRY

The Catawba Valley Community College cross country team made program history this past weekend, competing in its first-ever meet during the Fleet Feet Invitational at Salisbury Community Park.

The Red Hawks competed against 288 total runners at Saturday’s meet, which featured four-year colleges and universities and community colleges.

Allison Beard paced all Red Hawk runners with a time of 31 minutes, 22 seconds. She competed in the women’s 5K in a field of 122 runners.

The top men’s runner was Ryan Elben, who finished his 8K with a time of 35 minutes, 59 seconds. Preston Rutledge and Nick Shull weren’t far behind Elben, logging times of 39 minutes, 12 seconds and 40 minutes, four seconds, respectively.

“I am so proud of these athletes,” said Red Hawk cross country head coach Shawn Fountain. “They became part of the great athletic legacy at CVCC. They are the first cross country team in the history of CVCC. They went out and made Red Hawk Nation proud. I look forward to the rest of the season to see what these runners can accomplish.”

The Red Hawks’ next cross country meet takes place on Friday, Sept. 16 at the Fire Tower Project at Appalachian State University in Boone.

The Catawba Valley Community College cross country program is still looking to add runners for its first cross country team.  If you enjoy running and can complete a 5K, you might have what it takes to be a college athlete.

[Thanks to Cody Dalton of CVCC for the report.]
