JB Smith

January 17, 1948 – September 9, 2023


NEWTON, N.C. - JB Smith, 75, of Newton, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at his residence.

He was born January 17, 1948 in Catawba County to the late Paul and Mildred Carpenter Smith. JB was a member of Royal Chapel Church of God in Hickory and retired from the textiles industry as a machinery repairman. He enjoyed gardening and working on lawnmowers. JB loved God, his family, his animals, NASCAR, and wrestling. “Pop” was such a special, caring person to everyone he met.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Hill Smith; brothers, Haskal Smith and JW Smith; and sister, Brenda Smith McCrary.

Those left to cherish his memory is his son Richie Sigmon and wife Sindie of Hickory; daughter Wendy Clarke and husband Silas of Newton; brother James (Buck) Smith of Conover; sisters Prue Angel and husband Jim of Lincolnton, Joann Hedrick of Catawba, Patricia Shook and husband Bill of Vale, Jessie Stephens and husband Max of Hickory, Rita Pope and husband Todd of Catawba; grandchildren Andi (Squeaks) Sigmon, Zachary Clarke, Kaylee Clarke; brother-in-law  Nelson McCrary; numerous nieces and nephews.  

A service to celebrate JB’s life will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 4 p.m. at Royal Chapel Church of God in Hickory. Rev. Carlton Davidson and Rev. Dr. John Petty will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Royal Chapel Church of God. Those serving as pallbearers are Todd Starnes, Todd Pope, Cassandra Pope, Steve Smith, James Smith, and Nelson McCrary.
