LINCOLNTON––It’s official.

The drought that plagued North Carolina for nearly a year has been declared over at last. That’s the word Monday from Lincoln County Public Information Officer Vanessa León. As León informed, the Catawba-Wateree River Basin, of which Lincoln County is a part, has recovered thanks to the rains of November through the present.

“Lincoln County,” she said, “like many other jurisdictions in the North Carolina Piedmont, has experienced several beneficial rainfall events over the past several months. This has allowed the Catawba-Wateree River Basin to improve from the recent drought. Lincoln County follows the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group protocol for drought management in the Catawba-Wateree River Basin.”

That group has issued a statement to the effect that the Catawba-Wateree River Basin recovered to normal conditions on Feb. 16. The basin is no longer considered in a drought, and therefore all voluntary drought conservation restrictions have been lifted, as León informed.

“Lincoln County would like to thank our customers for partnering with us to conserve water during Drought Stage 1 and Drought Stage 0 conditions,” she said. “Drought indicators and demand on our water system will continue to be monitored by the county and the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group. The public will be notified of any changes in the basin’s condition.”
