NEWTON, N.C. - General Statute 143-215.1C requires the owner or operator of any wastewater collection or treatment works to issue a news release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters. In accordance with that regulation, the following news release has been prepared and issued to media in Catawba County and Lincoln County:
The City of Newton had a discharge of untreated wastewater on Jan. 25, 2024, that lasted approximately 8.25 hours at 1407 McKay Road. An estimated 12,375 gallons spilled into the right of way. An estimated 7,500 gallons reached Clark Creek in the Catawba River Basin. The spill was caused by inflow and infiltration.
No negative effects on water quality or the surrounding environment were observed. City staff are continuing to closely monitor the area. The city maintains its longstanding commitment to delivering water of the highest quality to its residences, businesses, and industries.
