MORGANTON––“Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

That’s how much Jesus loves His littlest ones, as we read in the 19th chapter and 14th verse of St. Matthew’s Gospel. And it’s been said that when His innocents are called Home, they do indeed fly straight to Heaven, so pure are their souls. They know not sin, and thus are they like unto angels.

So it was with Sophie Gray Bumgarner. This special, little toddler––the daughter of Matthew and Carly Bumgarner––was just 18 months old when she passed away after an accident, July 4.Matthew and Carly Bumgarner are joined by their daughters, Novie and Sophie.

Her aunt, Megan Dellinger, is acting as family spokeswoman at this time. Dellinger told The Herald more Tuesday.

Sophie, she said, “was a beautiful, spunky, little daredevil. She loved riding dirt bikes, being outside and playing with her cousins. She had a smile that could steal anyone’s heart.

“It has been very difficult to navigate through these last few days,” she continued. “But our family is relying on God’s love and His strength to carry us through.”

Sophie’s family members shared that each day, they have seen the goodness of God, as Sophie has touched the lives of those across multiple states. The family continues to find ways to bless other people in the midst of this difficult time. Multiple donations have been given in Sophie’s memory to support the Bumgarners in the wake of this terrible tragedy.

“Sophie will always be a shining light in our lives,” Dellinger said, “and we plan to celebrate her in every way possible for the rest of ours. The community has supported us in the most beautiful way, and we are eternally grateful for that.”

She added that multiple donations have been made to the family through a “Go Fund Me” account. But as that goal was quickly met, the Bumgarner family has said that further donations will be sent to benefit another family in need, that of Wyatt Gordon.

“We continue to ask that donations be sent there,” said Dellinger.

Sophie much enjoyed sharing fun times with her sister, Novie.
