In 1870 Hiram Rhodes Revels, a Republican from Mississippi was sworn into the United States Senate, becoming the first African American ever to sit in Congress. Revels previously lived in Lincolnton, N.C. during the 1840s where he owned and operated a barbershop. A historic marker for him is located on the Court Square in Lincolnton.
